Rajab: An ideal time to gear-up for Ramadan

Rajab: An ideal time to gear-up for Ramadan

As the blessed month of Ramadan is on us, many of us are aiming to spend this Ramadan with a great spiritual effort and sincerity. To turn that intention into reality the Month of Rajab is an ideal time to prepare for the month of Ramadan.
Starting to gear ourselves up from now (in the month of Rajab), when the month of Ramadan dawns upon us we will be able to benefit completely. So in this manner the holy month of Rajab is our first step towards the blessed month of Ramadan.
Allah’s Messenger pbuh said, Rajab is the month of Allah, Shaaban is my month and Ramadan is the month of my followers (i.e. Muslim)
Scholars say: Rajab is the Allah’s month of repentance (istighfar), Shaaban is the month of sending peace and mercy (salawat/durood shareef ) upon the Prophet, and Ramadan is the month of Qur’an.
The month of Rajab is one of the four sacred months mentioned in the Quran,
Rajab is a month in which worship is rewarded magnificently – especially fasting and seeking repentance (Istighfar). Also, making Dua during the first eve of Rajab is highly recommended. In these blessed days of Rajab,
With this in mind, if we don’t want to waste our valuable time of Ramadan and want to get most out of Ramadan then here are some ways to prepare ourselves for Ramadan.
We should increase our Ibaad’ah in this month of Rajab. Then by the time we get into gear, blessed days of Ramadan will approach. This is why the Prophet would recite the following Du‘a after the month of Rajab would commence
O Allah! Bless us in the months of Rajab and Shaaban, and make us reach Ramadan (by granting us life until then) It is mentioned on the authority of Anas Bin Malik (May Allah be pleased with him) that when the Holy Prophet (saw) sighted the moon of Rajab, he used to pray to Allah in the following words:
‘Allahuma Barik lana fi Rajaba wa Sha’bana wa ballighna Ramadhan’
“O Allah, make the months of Rajab and Sha’ban blessed for us, and let us reach the month of Ramadan (i.e. prolong our life up to Ramadan, so that we may benefit from its merits and blessings).”
One of the greatest virtue of the holy month is 27th night of Rajab, the Prophet, peace and mercy be upon him, was taken on the Isra wa Mi’raj (The Night Journey and Ascension to the Heavens).
As most of us aware that there was a great and glorious night, in which the Prophet, peace and mercy be upon him, met his Lord and was given the commandment to perform the 5 daily prayers.
To get most out of this holy month we can improve our relationship with the Qurān by increasing the amount we read and seeking to acting upon it.
Being consistent in reading our Adhkār in the morning and evening also a chance of seeking repentance (Istighfar).
Fasting whatever days you are able to, especially Monday and Thursday and the 13th, 14th and 15th days of this month are highly recommended.
Giving charity and doing what you can to help those in need or treating them kindly is a way to put our great efforts in this month.
Worshipping Allah in these nights, especially in the last portion of the night.  Being so particular in night prayers so as to enter into those who Allah praises in the Qur’ān: Those who spend their wealth (in charity) and seek forgiveness in the last portion of the night.
Ask Allah to give us a great portion of the gifts bestowed in this month and that He makes us among those who attain acceptance and felicity in this life and the next.

O Allah, bless us in Rajab and Shaaban, allow us to reach Ramadan and assist us in fasting and praying in the night.(Ameen).

These voluntary prayers are held in the mosques every night of the month, during which a whole section of the Quran (Juz’, which is 1/30 of the Quran) is recited. Therefore, the entire Quran would be completed at the end of the month.

The four sacred months

The four sacred months

The four sacred months

Among the twelve lunar months in the Hijri calendar, some months are favored over all other months, like Ramadan because it is the month of mercy, the month of Qur’an, and the month of forgiveness. Four other months are also favored in the Islamic tradition and are called the Sacred Months.
The sanctity of these months was established long time ago, even before the birth of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The four sacred months were known since the time of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him).
The main purpose of the sanctity of these months was to ban battles and make the Haj journey, the pilgrimage, towards the Kaabah safe. In addition to the month of Haj (Dhul Hijja), a month preceding it (Dhul Qidah) and a month succeeding it (Muharram), and also the month of Rajab were specified as being sacred.

The following verse in the Holy Qur’an:

The following verse in the Holy Qur’an mentions that there are four sacred months in the year.
{Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve (lunar) months in the register of Allah (from) the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred. That is the correct religion (i.e. way), so do not wrong yourselves during them. And fight against the disbelievers collectively as they fight against you collectively. And know that Allah is with the righteous (who fear Him)} (Chapter 9, verse 36)
In these four sacred months, people could travel and move about in safety and without fear. People performed Haj or Umrah during these months. Another major benefit experienced by the people during these months was that the trade caravans moved about their business, crossing the Arabian Desert towards Syria in the north and Yemen in the south.
A historical incident took place in the sacred month of Rajab in the lifetime of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), two years after migration. This incident was mentioned in the Holy Qur’an.
{They ask you about the sacred month – about fighting therein. Say, “Fighting therein is great [sin], but averting [people] from the way of Allah and disbelief in Him and [preventing access to] al-Masjid al-Haram and the expulsion of its people therefrom are greater [evil] in the sight of Allah. And fitnah is greater than killing}. (Chapter 2, verse 217)
Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) sent a small detachment of eight men to a place called ‘Nakhlah’, a valley midway between the cities of Makkah and Taif.  The Prophet (peace be upon him) had given clear instructions to the detachment to only watch the movement of the enemy, Quraish, and their allied camps and try to find out if they had any plans to attack Muslims in Madinah. It was supposed to be an exploratory expedition.
Although this detachment had not been given permission to fight, a skirmish and ambush resulted. They erroneously assumed that the sacred month of Rajab was over. They attacked a small caravan of the Quraish, killed one amongst them, and took the rest as prisoners, and brought them to the Prophet (peace be upon him) in Madinah along with their merchandise.
Quraish, the Jews, and even the hypocrites of Madinah made a huge hue and cry. They raised an extremely strong objection over the whole of Arabia against the Muslims and the Prophet (peace be upon him) for fighting and shedding blood in a sacred month.
Because the Prophet (peace be upon him) had not given permission to the detachment to fight or kill or violate the sanctity of the Sacred Month, it was indeed considered an unlawful and unauthorized act of the over-zealous detachment.  The Prophet (peace be upon him) set those prisoners taken in the ambush at Nakhlah free, gave them back their goods, and even paid the blood-money to the heirs of the one who was killed in the ambush; and thus reaffirmed the sanctity of the prohibition of fighting and war in the four Sacred Months.
Meaning of the Sacred Months

Muharram:

It is the very first month in the Hijri calendar. The literal meaning of Muharram is ‘forbidden’. It has always been considered a holy period in which Arabs used to avoid fighting with each other.
Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to fast in this month. It is reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “The best of fasts besides the month of Ramadan is the fasting of Allah’s month of Muharram.” (Muslim)

Rajab:

It is the seventh and sacred month meaning ‘to respect’, as it was always considered as a sacred time. It falls between Jumada Al-Akhir and Shabaan. In the month of Rajab, even in pre-Islamic times, there was a ceasefire among the Arabs to permit people to peacefully travel and perform Umrah.

Dhul Qidah:

It is the eleventh month, which was always a sacred time of the year and was the first one in which the Arabs avoided fighting.

Dhul Hijja:

It is the last and one of the most auspicious months of the Hijri calendar, which is named so because Haj (pilgrimage), the fifth pillar of Islam is performed in this month.
Abu Hurairah narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) once said, “Whoever performs Haj and does not commit any obscenity or transgression shall return [free from sins] as he was on the day his mother gave birth to him.” (Al-Bukhari)
These four months were called sacred for the gravity of committing a sin during them and for the position Allah gave them. Sinning during the sacred months is more evil than sinning during the other months. Likewise, the reward for righteous deeds is greater in these four sacred months.

The Purposes of the Sharia in Hajj

Allah Almighty did not create us in vain and will not neglect us. Rather, He created us to inhabit the earth and achieve succession on it. This, however, will not be realized unless we become the best ummah (nation) brought to mankind, and this necessitates purifying the self, which is a persistent enjoiner of evil. The only means to purify the self is to apply the teachings of Islam, fulfill its pillars as we learnt them from the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) and be keen to dedicate all our righteous deeds solely for the sake of Allah. Allah Almighty says (what means): {Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allah is greater. And Allah knows that which you do.} [Quran 29: 45]
In a hadith, the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “Whose prayer does not forbid him from doing immorality and evil, he gets nothing but going further from Allah.” Regarding the pillar of fasting, the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “How many people are fasting and receive no reward but the suffering of hunger and thirst.”
This means that fasting and prayer do not benefit the servant when he goes to extremes in committing immorality and harming Muslims. When the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) was asked about a woman who used to intensively fast and pray but used to harm her neighbors, he judged her to be among the dwellers of Hell.
There are neither sexual relations nor disobedience:
Allah Almighty says (what means): {Hajj is [during] well-known months, so whoever has made Hajj obligatory upon himself therein [by entering the state of ihram (state of ritual consecration)], there is [to be for him] no sexual relations and no disobedience and no disputing during Hajj.} [Quran 2: 197]
The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “Whoever performs a Hajj during which he neither commits sexual intercourse nor disobedience will return as sinless as a newborn on the day that his mother delivered him.” [Al-Bukhari]
Imam Al-Ghazaali, may Allah have mercy on him, mentioned that from the etiquettes of Hajj is that one should treat his companions kindly. The leader should gently treat those who are with him and do what is beneficial for them. The travelers should say good words to each other, provide food, and show the best morals.
Addressing His beloved, Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) Allah Almighty says (what means) concerning zakah: {Take [O, Muhammad] from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them increase, and invoke [Allah’s blessings] upon them. Indeed, your invocations are reassurance for them. And Allah is Hearing and Knowing.} [Quran 9: 103]
The sublime purpose and supreme request is purifying the self and refining the soul and the senses. For the pillars of Islam to be accepted, it is a prerequisite that the Muslim fears Allah, wishes all goodness for the servants of Allah, and avoids harming his fellow Muslims in any way. There are many of those who pray and receive no benefit of their prayer; rather, they obtain nothing but tiredness since their prayer does not forbid them from doing evil and committing misdeeds.
The best and most beloved righteous deeds:
In a marfoo‘ hadith that was narrated by ‘Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, it was mentioned that: “The best deed is to make a believer happy by clothing him (to cover his ‘awrah), satisfying his hunger or fulfilling his need.” [At-Tabarani]
It was also narrated on the authority of Ibn ‘Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them, that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “The most beloved deed to Allah Almighty, next to the obligatory acts of worship, is to make a Muslim happy.” [At-Tabarani]
It was narrated on the authority of Al-Hasan ibn ‘Ali, may Allah be pleased with them, that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “One of the causes of winning the forgiveness (of Allah) is to make your Muslim brother happy.” [At-Tabarani]
Reflecting on these hadiths, one realizes that the common idea is to highlight the moral aspect, which aims at the unity of Muslims and at discarding whatever leads to dispute and rancor. The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) considered it one of the best forms of jihad that a Muslim spares the people his evil. It was narrated on the authority of Abu Sa‘eed Al-Khudri, may Allah be pleased with him, that a man came to the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) and said: “O Messenger of Allah! Who is the best of mankind?” The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) replied: “A believer who performs jihad with his life and property for the sake of Allah.” “Who is next?” the enquirer asked again. The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “It is he who saves the people from his evil.” [Al-Bukhari, Muslim, and Al-Hakim (with slight differences in wording)]
It is as if Allah, the Creator, has put this slogan for the Muslims in order for them to be guided therewith in their transactions. It is my advice to you to fear Allah regarding your beloved brothers in religion and creed.
Piety of hearts:
Hajj is one of the greatest rituals of the great religion of Islam. Allah Almighty has prescribed it in order to purify His servants from all sins and misdeeds as well as the seduction and filth of the worldly life. The obligation of Hajj is in fact a response to a great and wise divine call. Allah Almighty says (what means): {And proclaim to the people the Hajj [pilgrimage]; they will come to you on foot and on every lean camel; they will come from every distant pass.} [Quran 22: 27] This call has to be honored and respected. Allah Almighty says (what means): {That [is so]. And whoever honors the symbols of Allah—indeed, it is from the piety of hearts.} [Quran 22: 32]
Reflecting on the verses, one observes that piety and purification of the soul is the most important relation between all acts of worship.
We should know that seeking what is good and avoiding what is evil is the supreme purpose and requirement. When it is achieved, the wounds resulting from disputes will heal, all Muslims will be united like the most pious person’s heart, the old will be kind to the young, the rich will be kind to the poor, and the strong will be kind to the weak. Only with this will Islam become strong, its flag will become high, and nothing will be above it.
There is no disputing in Hajj:
An aspect of honoring this great obligation is to perform it as Allah Almighty wants, hoping that He will accept it. Also, one is required to avoid whatever renders it invalid or makes its reward imperfect. Allah Almighty says (what means): {Hajj is [during] well-known months, so whoever has made Hajj obligatory upon himself therein [by entering the state of ihram (ritual state of consecration)], there is [to be for him] no sexual relations and no disobedience and no disputing during Hajj.} [Quran 2: 197]
There is no disputing either during or after the Hajj. The Muslim enjoys a pure soul and heart and likes for his fellow Muslim whatever he likes for himself. Moreover, he grieves when his Muslim brother is hurt, even because of a thorn, or is afflicted with a disaster. On the other hand, he is prone to seek revenge, abuse the honor of his brother, lie to him, and deceive him. Astonishingly, you see some Muslims who are very modest in words and deeds but when one of them is tried, he proves that he is very far from faith and the fear of Allah. He forgets that Muslims, and all other people, will return to Allah, the Creator, the Supreme Judge and the Ever-Just, and nothing is hidden in the earth or in the heavens from Him.
The Muslim, whether he is a pilgrim or not, should avoid the sins of backbiting, tale bearing, telling lies, cheating, deceiving, arguing, disputing, and quarrelling. Allah Almighty forbids that a Muslim is violated in any way, for this is likely to raise evil and plant enmity and hatred among Muslims. Qataadah, may Allah have mercy on him, said: “The righteous deed is greater in reward during the sacred months, and disobedience is greater in sin during these months as well; even though disobedience is grave and hideous at all times.”
The obligation performed once in a lifetime—Hajj, which is performed during numbered days—is a test for the Muslims. Will they be patient to avoid evil during and after Hajj? Whoever has a good soul and a truthful intention, Allah will help him, strengthen his morale, and boost his determination. Allah Almighty says (what means): {And those who strive for Us—We will surely guide them to Our ways. And indeed, Allah is with the doers of good.} [Quran 29: 69]
All acts of worship, whether they are daily or annual, constitute a school. Hajj is the obligation required once in a lifetime. It is a school that teaches us how to purify ourselves during and after these numbered days and until we meet Allah Almighty.
We should perform the rituals of Hajj with a spirit of brotherhood, unity, and collaboration. We should act like one body and seek one goal while our hearts are full of the ember of faith that filled the hearts of the Companions of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ). We should follow the example of our righteous predecessors in loving each other, seeking excuses for each other, and treating each other in a way that pleases Allah Almighty.
The best companion:
It was narrated that Buhaym Al-‘Ijli, may Allah have mercy on him, who was a tearful, devoted worshiper, accompanied a rich merchant during the Hajj journey. When it was the day of travel, Buhaym, may Allah have mercy on him, kept weeping until his tears fell to the ground and said: “This journey reminds me of my journey to Allah.” Then he engaged in loud weeping, a matter that annoyed his companion, the merchant. After returning from the Hajj, a man came to visit them. He started with the merchant and asked him about his status with Buhaym, may Allah have mercy on him. The merchant said: “By Allah, I do not think that there is someone like him from among people. Although he is poor and I am rich, he was better than me in spending. Although he is old and I am young, he was better than me in serving. Although he was fasting and I was not, he cooked food for me.” Then the visitor left the merchant and entered upon Buhaym, may Allah have mercy on him, greeted him, and then asked him about the status of the merchant during the journey. Buhaym, may Allah have mercy on him, answered: “He was the best companion. He remembered Allah often, recited the Quran for long periods of time, quickly engaged in weeping, and endured the faults of his companion. May Allah reward him whit what is good for this.”
O Allah, accept our deeds, Hajj, fasting, and voluntary night prayer, and make us righteous servants of Yours…Ameen

The call to success

The call to success

Amidst the pandemonium of life, one is exposed to different varieties of sounds, some beneficial to us and some harmful.
In most cases, listening to the sounds around us is a passive, involuntary action.
However, if you voluntarily listen to the call to prayer as it echoes from the mosques, with awareness, with the proper intention, and with the proper etiquette and decorum, you can earn the rewards that will grant you the most wondrous thing … paradise!
It’s true. Indeed our Lord is Al-Wadood (The most Loving) that He has given us so many opportunities to taste the bliss of paradise.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Paradise is affirmed for him who pronounces the adhan (call to prayer), sixty good deeds will be written for him, and for every iqamah, he will get thirty good deeds.” [authentic Hadith, reported by Ibn Majah, authenticated by al-Albani]
Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated, “We were with Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him), when Bilal got up and called for the prayer. When he finished, Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him)
said, “Whoever says (the same words) as he says with certainty, will enter paradise.” [An-Nisaa’i, authenticated by Al-Albani]
One should realize the significance of the adhan, for it is the call to worship the King of the Kings, our Creator, Allah. Indeed the one who calls to such an important message is rewarded beautifully, just as the person who hears it and repeats it. Who ever thought that we would be rewarded with the gardens of paradise just for saying the adhan? We should appreciate how important the adhan is.
In another Hadith, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “The mu’adhin (the one who calls for prayer) will be forgiven, as much as he raises his voice (with the adhan), and everything fresh and dry that hears him will ask forgiveness for him (in another version will witness for him or attest for him).” [Ahmad, Abu Dawoud, at-Tabarani, and authenticated by Al-Albani]
Another amazing Hadith is narrated by Umar bin Al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger (peace be upon him) said, “When the Mu’adhin says, “ (Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest),” and you say, “Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest”, and when he says, “I testify that there is no God but Allah,” you say, “I testify that there is no God but Allah”. When he says, “I testify that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah,” you say, “I testify that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah”, and when he says, “Come to prayer”, you say, “There is neither might nor any power except by Allah”. When he says, “Come to success”, you say, “There is neither might nor any power except by Allah”. When he says, “Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest”, then respond, “Allah is the Greatest”. When he says, “There is no God but Allah), if you say from your heart (with sincerity), “There is no God but Allah,” you will enter Paradise.” [Sahih Muslim]
If we listen carefully to the words of the call to prayer, we will realize that truly the adhan is one of the most important reminders. It is the reminder to salah (prayer), a reminder that indeed in salah is our success.
Another beautiful Hadith: Isa bin Talhah said, “I was with Mu’awiyah bin Abu Sufyan when the Mu’adhin came in and called for prayer. Mu’awiyah said, “I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say, “The ones who call for prayer will have the longest necks on the Day of Resurrection.” [Sahih Muslim]
This Hadith highlights how much we should value and respect the mu’adhin, and how much we should pay close attention to adhan.
The mu’adhin receives rewards from Allah every time someone has heard the adhan and went to perform the prayer.
The phrase “will have the longest necks” as mentioned in the above Hadith has been given different interpretations. It may mean that they are the ones who long for the mercy of Allah more than anyone else. Another interpretation is that their necks will grow longer on the Day of Requital and so sweat will not reach them, for everyone will sweat on that day depending on his deeds: sweat will reach up to one’s ankles or knees or waists. In the case of some people, sweat will reach up to their mouths. Another interpretation is that those who call to prayer will have an honorable and great status on the Day of Judgment.
Indeed, the case of men and women is strange; they keep running behind success, yet disregard the call to success.
Therefore, I appeal to all my brothers and sisters to truly pay attention to the adhan and respond accordingly. We exhibit such keen concentration in so many other frivolities that take up our time. Our conscience ought to prick us the next time we ignore the adhan!
Another excellent practice that I encourage Muslims to do is mentioned in the following Hadith. Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said, “A supplication made between the adhan and the iqamah is not rejected.” [Abu Dawud, authenticated by Al-Albani]
Finally let us all always keep in mind the Hadith in which Abu Sa’eed Al-Khudri said, “Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said, “Whenever you hear the adhan, say what the mu’adhin is saying.” [Sahih Al-Bukhari] That is a simple task to do with great rewards, we just need to be more mindful and aware.

Ramadan in Madinah

Ramadan in Madeenah

Al-Medinah Al-Munawwarah (the LightedCity) becomes livelier during the month of Ramadan. During this blessed month, all the markets and shopping centers around the Prophet’s Mosque are crowded with visitors and are opened till late at night.
Ramadan in Madeenah, the blessed city of the Prophet is truly amazing. Imagine this, everyone around you tries his utmost to be as nice as possible, as generous as possible.
Muslims standing at the gates of the Prophet’s Mosque inviting strangers to break the fast with them, others handing out water and dates to those leaving the Mosque, people telling each other that they love them for the Sake of Allaah.
Quran is heard from all corners of the city: from offices, from stores, from homes, from cars, all day long. All this signals the arrival of the blessed month of Ramadan. Then, in the evenings, the most beautiful recitations emanate from the sacred mosque for Taraweeh prayers.
Finally, every night, in the last ten nights of Ramadan, everyone joins the night prayer at the sacred mosque striving to have their sins forgiven, and hoping to catch the Night of Decree (Laylatul-Qadr).

Ramadan in Makkah

Wherever in the world they may be, when the sun sets at the end of the day, those who have fasted turn to face one location: the Sacred Ka’bah in the city of Makkah. The crystal-clear “Allaahu Akbar” of the familiar Makkan Athaan rings through the city where the Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) spent so much happiness and sorrow.

In Makkah, the spirit of giving and remembering Allaah, is truly manifested during Ramadan. The emphasis remains on worship and not on food and festivities as in many other places. It is an amazing sight to see thousands upon thousands of people be all accommodated with dates and water (and even more) for the breaking of the fast. And as the Athaan is called, one cannot escape the sheer generosity of Makkans, offering food and water to all.
It is not unusual to see a man with a pick-up van full of cooked rice and chicken dishing food out to everyone who passes by. The wealthy provide Iftaar and clothes for the poor, and organizations are active in giving huge amounts of charity.
Makkah in Ramadan is filled with visitors performing ‘Umrah or spending a vacation of their lifetime. For them, it is the Ramadan of a lifetime. For residents of the normally quiet city, however, the place is turned upside down.
“The traffic really picks up, and the routine of the city is reversed,” said one resident of Makkah. “Day becomes night and night becomes day. People sleep in late and the shops stay open late.”
Also, locals are flanked by visitors who are in the city for the month; a year’s supply of houseguests comes all at once for them.
During Ramadan, there is much reading of the Quran in the city in which it was first revealed and the true spirit of Ramadan prevails.
Makkans usually break their fast in homes, often in big gatherings with families and friends. The breakfast usually begins with soups of all kinds, then with the traditional Samboosah and Soubia.
A common tradition of Makkaans is that bringing food to the mosque in their local area becomes a noticeable phenomenon during this month, to the point that hardly any Muslim is left hungry during this blessed month.
Families will bring their food to Al-Masjid Al-Haraam (the Sacred Mosque) to break fast there and then offer the Maghrib Prayer together. Later at night, during Taraaweeh Prayer, Al-Masjid Al-Haraam will be as bright as daytime, and nearly as full as it does during Hajj.
It is amazing to think it, but in nearly every place on earth someone from our Ummah will be fasting Ramadan. No other religion could claim such a united and unanimous act of worship amongst its believers. So in the spirit of this joyous and blessed month, let us not forget our brothers and sisters in every part of the world. Virtues of ‘Umrah Performed in Ramadan

Virtues of ‘Umrah Performed in Ramadan

Ibn ‘Abbaas may Allaah be pleased with him narrated, “When the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) returned after performing Hajj (major pilgrimage), he asked Umm Sinaan Al-Ansaariyyah,Why did you not perform Hajj?’ She replied, ‘The father of so-and-so [i.e., her husband] had two camels and he went on pilgrimage on one of them, and the second is used for the irrigation of our land.’ The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said [to her]:AnUmrah (minor pilgrimage) in Ramadan is akin to Hajj with me [in terms of reward].’ [Al-Bukhaari and Muslim] According to another narration, he told her: When Ramadan comes, do ‘Umrah as [the reward for] it then is equivalent to Hajj.”

Likewise, it was reported by Umm Ma‘qil may Allaah be pleased with her that the Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ), said to her, “PerformUmrah in Ramadan, as it is equal to Hajj.‎[Abu Daawood] Similar Hadeeths were also narrated on the authority of Jaabir, Anas, Abu Hurayrah and Wahb ibn Khanbash may Allaah be pleased with them all.

Ibn Battaal may Allaah have mercy upon him commented on the aforementioned Hadeeths, saying:
The sentence that ‘Umrah “then is equivalent to Hajj, proves that the Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ), was actually encouraging her to perform a voluntary Hajj, as the whole Ummah (Muslim nation) has unanimously agreed that the Umrah can never be a substitute for the obligatory Hajj. Moreover, what he, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ), meant is that they are like each other in reward, but virtues cannot truly be perceived through analogy; and Allaah The Almighty bestows His Bounty upon whom He Wills.

Benefits and rulings [derived from these Hadeeths]:
1-    The mercy and bounty bestowed by Allaah The Almighty upon His slaves is great, as He granted them huge rewards in return for small good deeds; so, we praise Him abundantly for that.
2-    The Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ), was keen on ensuring the welfare of his Ummah and would ask after those under his rule. Just as he was the sincerest confidant to all people, any slave whom Allaah The Almighty puts in charge of subjects should treat them leniently, advise them, check on their conditions and serve their worldly and religious benefits.
3-    ‘Umrah done during the month of Ramadan cannot be a substitute for the obligatory Hajj, i.e., they are equal in reward, but the former does not replace the latter as a fulfillment of the obligation that is unanimously agreed upon by the scholars.
4-    The reward of good deeds increases in proportion to the virtue of the time they are performed in, as well as one’s heartfelt devotion and dedication.
5-    This Hadeeth is similar to the narration that says, “The Chapter Al-Ikhlaas (Purification) equals one third of the Quran”; it indicates that it is equivalent in terms of the reward of recitation, not that reciting it could, or should, substitute actually reciting [that much or] the whole of the Quran.
6-    The ‘Umrah here is considered equal to the Hajj in reward, when it is performed during the month of Ramadan, which is a great season for good deeds. Hence, whoever performs it then, enjoys the virtue of the place [i.e., the Sacred Mosque in Makkah] and time [i.e., Ramadan]; this is also the case with one who performs Hajj, as he is also in the same holy place and in a blessed time [i.e., months of Hajj].
In addition, doing ‘Umrah in the month of Ramadan ‎is more difficult. That is because one may be fasting while performing it or break his fast due to the traveling involved, and then have to make up for it. This is not the case when one performs Umrah during any other month. The Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ), said to ‘Aa‘ishah may Allaah be pleased with her once, when he ordered her to perform ‘Umrah, “It [i.e., its reward] is according to your effort”, or, as per another narration, “according to your expenditure.”[Muslim]
7-    This great reward is granted to whoever performs the ‘Umrah during the month of Ramadan, even if he [or she] returns immediately thereafter and does not prolong his [or her] stay in Makkah.
8-    These Hadeeths do not mean that it is recommended for one to perform Umrah many times in the month of Ramadan or in a single day of it. This practice, which has become common today, differs from the Sunnah and traditions of the honorable Companions may Allaah be pleased with them as it was not reported that any of them used to perform many ‘Umrahs during the same journey to Makkah.
9-    Whoever performs ‘Umrah in Ramadan and intends to stay at the Holy Mosque during the whole month or its last ten nights, should guard himself against committing any prohibition, because evil deeds are more sacrilegious in Makkah than in any other place, not to mention, during the month of Ramadan.
10-    Whoever takes his family to stay at the Holy Mosque during the month of Ramadan, should take care that they, too, do not fall into committing any forbidden act; otherwise, he may return with sins that exceed the reward he came to earn, due to his negligence towards his wife and children.
11-    If one entered the state of Ihraam (ritual consecration) with the intention of performing Umrah and reached Makkah while fasting, he has the choice of either breaking his fast to be able to do it immediately or waiting to do it until after sunset. It is better for him to break his fast during the daytime and perform ‘Umrah upon arrival, since doing ‘Umrah right after reaching Makkah, is what the Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ), did.

Umrah in Ramadan is Equivalent to Hajj

Umrah in Ramadan is Equivalent to Hajj

Al-Bukhaari (1782) and Muslim (1256) reported that Ibn ‘Abbas said: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said to a woman from Ansaar – Ibn ‘Abbas, stated her name but I fail to recall it

“What kept you from performing Hajj with us?”

She replied: We only have two camels and my husband and my son had gone for Hajj on one camel, and he left us the other camel so that we could carry water on it. He said:

“When Ramadaan comes, go for Umrah, for Umrah in (Ramadan) is equivalent to Hajj.”

The scholars have varied opinions regarding the one who reaches the virtue declared in the hadith. There are three sentiments:

  1. That this hadith relates only to the woman who was spoken to by the Prophet (PBUH). Among those who preferred this understanding was Sa’eed ibn Jubayr among the Taabi’een, as was described from him by Ibn Hajar in Fath al-Baari (3/605). Among the evidence mentioned in support of this opinion is the hadith of Umm Ma’qil who said: Hajj is Hajj and ‘Umrah is ‘Umrah. The Messenger of Allaah (PBUH) said this to me and I do not know whether it was just for me or for all people. Told by Abu Dawood (1989), but this version is da’eef (weak); it was ranked as da’eef by al-Albaani in Da’eef Abu Dawood.
  2. That this virtue is reached by the one who plans to do Hajj but is unable to perform Hajj, then he makes up for it by doing Umrah in Ramadan. For by merging the intent to do Hajj with performance of Umrah in Ramadan, he achieves the reward of performing one Hajj with the Prophet (PBUH).Ibn Rajab said in Lataa’if al-Ma’aarif (p. 249). It should be eminent that the one who is unable to do a good deed and repentances and desires that he could do it will get the reward same of the one who does it – and he mentioned a few instances of that – Some women missed out on doing Hajj with the Prophet (PBUH), and when he came they asked him about what would constitute for that Hajj, and he said:

“Do Umrah in Ramadan, for ‘Umrah in Ramadan is equivalent to Hajj or to Hajj with me (The Prophet).”

Ibn Katheer said something related in his Tafseer (1/531). This view was cited by Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah as something possible in Majmoo’ al-Fataawa (26/293-294).

  3. The view of the scholars of the four madhhabs and others, that the virtue stated in this hadith is general in sense and relates to everyone who does umrah in the month of Ramadan. Umrah at that time is equal to Hajj for all people, not only for a few people or in certain conditions.

Reference: Radd al-Muhtaar (2/473); Mawaahib al-Jaleel (3/29); al-Majmoo’ (7/138); al-Mughni (3/91); al-Mawsoo’ah al-Fiqhiyyah (2/144). The most precise of these opinions – and Allah knows best – is the last one, and the virtue is general in sense and is achieved by all those who do umrah in Ramadan. This is specified by the following:

  1. The hadith was told from a number of the Sahabah. Al-Tirmidhi believed regarding this issue from Ibn ‘Abbas, Jaabir, Abu Hurayrah, Anas and Wahb ibn Khanbash. Maximum accounts of this hadith does not report the name of woman who asked the question.
  2. The act of individuals throughout the periods, namely the Sahabah, Taabi’een, scholars and righteous people, who have always been keen to perform umrah in Ramadan so that they may achieve this reward.

As for the notion that the virtue could only be achieved by one who was unable to perform Hajj that year because of some obstacle, it may be said that if a person sincerely planned and determined to do Hajj, and acquired the proper resources, then was barred by something that was beyond his control, then Allah will declare the reward for that deed because of his intent. So how the Prophet (PBUH) could mark the reward restricted upon doing some supplementary act, namely performing umrah in Ramadan, when the genuine intent is adequate to achieve the reward?

Going to Umrah in Ramadan

Ibn-i Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, narrates:
When Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, wanted to go to the Farewell Hajj (His last Hajj-Pilgrimage to Mecca), a woman said to her husband: “Send me, too, on the camel to Hajj with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.”
Her husband replied: “I don’t have a camel with me to give you for Hajj.”
The woman said: “Send me to Hajj on that male camel.”
The man said: “It is under protection to be used on the way of Allah.” And he went to the Prophet.
“My wife sent her salaam (greetings) and Allah’s mercy (As-Salam wa Rahmatullah). She wanted me to send her to Hajj with you. She said: ‘Send me to Hajj with the Messenger of Allah.’ And I said I didn’t have a camel with me to give her for Hajj.
But my wife said: ‘Send me to Hajj with that camel.’
And I replied: ‘That camel is under protection to be used on the way of Allah.’
Thereupon, the Prophet said: “If you send your wife to Hajj on that camel, then the camel will be on the way of Allah.”
The man said: “My wife wanted me to ask what the equivalent deed is to the Hajj with you.”
The Messenger of Allah replied: “Convey to your wife my salaam, Allah’s mercy and barakat/blessings and tell her that Umrah (the lesser pilgrimage performed in Mecca. Unlike hajj, ‘umrah can be performed throughout the year.) in Ramadan is equivalent to Hajj with me.” (Abu Dawud, Manasik: 80; Muslim, Hajj: 221)
Umra in Ramadan is equivalent to Hajj
Abdullah ibn-i Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, narrates:
The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) told a woman from Ansar (The Believers in Madinah who helped and hosted the migrating Believers from Makkah):

Go to Umrah when the month of Ramadan comes. This is because the reward of Umrah performed in this month is equal to Hajj. (Nasai, Siyam: 6)

The Reward of Umrah in Ramadan
Ibn-i Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, narrates:
The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said:

Whoever reaches makkah in the month of Ramadan and fasts and passes his/her night worshipping as much as he can, Allah writes for him/her the reward of a hundred thousand fasting of the month of Ramadan performed outside of Makkah and Allah bestows on him/her for each day and night the reward of freeing a slave.
For each day, He writes the reward of a horse’s attack against the enemy on the way of Allah. And He writes for day a hasana (good deed), and for night a hasana. (Ibn Majah, Manasik: 106.)

Longing for Haj and Preparing Early for it

The preparation for Hajj is among the important issues linked to Ramadan. We should make an early start in order to get ready for it so that Allaah The Almighty may guide us to perform Hajj to His Sacred House. Just as one should get ready for Ramadan in order to attain the mercy and forgiveness of Allaah The Exalted and to be saved from Hell in this great season of forgiveness, one should start preparing for Hajj well in advance as well. If one does not start preparing early, then even if Allaah The Almighty decrees Hajj for him, his Hajj may not be Hajj Mabroor (an accepted Hajj) which is not equaled to anything upon which the sun rises as mentioned in a narration from the traditions of the Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ).
Early preparation for the season of Hajj, the season of forgiveness and great salvation
We should all acquire knowledge of the various aspects of the Hajj for several reasons:
The first is that if Allaah The Exalted guides man to perform Hajj, then he is ready for it, and he comes back from it with his sins and misdeeds obliterated. He returns as sinless as a new-born child that has just been delivered by his mother, as mentioned by the Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) in the Saheeh of Al-Bukhaari and Muslim.
Otherwise, he would be like a person who lives through Ramadan without being forgiven. If man does not get ready for Ramadan in time, when Ramadan comes, he tries to adapt to fasting and performing Qiyaam till Ramadan is over. Just when he tries to taste the sweetness of obedience, the sweetness of Qiyaam, the sweetness of Thikr, the sweetness of the Quran, and when he begins to do the good deeds related to Ramadan, he finds that Ramadan is over. That is why people should get ready for these days and seasons early, so that these seasons arrive and they are ready to receive the mercy of Allaah The Almighty. Thus, they receive more of the mercy and forgiveness of Allaah The Almighty, and feel closer to Allaah The Exalted and good deeds. However, if death approaches him and he is not ready for the mercy, forgiveness and blessings of Allaah The Almighty, when will he ever attain them?
The second reason is that if one prepares for these days with righteousness and good deeds, perhaps Allaah may guide him and bestow upon him the blessing of Hajj. This is if He finds him keen on attaining the reward of this great obligation which is one of the obligations of Islam if He finds him keen, truthful and sincere in seeking this season which is one of the seasons of forgiveness. Perhaps Allaah The Almighty may, out of His generosity, grant him the blessing of going to His Sacred House.
However, if the season arrives and there are people who are not engaged in learning about Hajj, and it does not cross their minds even once, and who feel that they cannot perform Hajj and do not even think of performing it – this should not be the state of a believer. Rather, one of the most important factors by which Allaah The Almighty carries man to His Sacred House is longing for this House. That is to say that when a man has this feeling of longing, Allaah The Almighty carries him there regardless of the reasons, regardless of the impediments he was thinking of, regardless of the obstacles he meets and regardless of the preparations he reflects upon such as money, visa and so on. Allaah The Almighty drives all these cares away from him all of a sudden. That is why if someone asks: How can one prepare these days for the season of Hajj and great forgiveness whose days are approaching us; namely the months of Hajj which we are living now?
It is said that the first thing with which one gets ready is longing. If one does not have the feeling of longing and yearning for the House of Allaah The Almighty, this is evidence that he has no longing to meet Allaah The Exalted, nor for the Hereafter. Rather, his heart is tough, hard and distant and this deprives him of the good deeds and great acts that bring him closer to Allaah The Almighty which He grants to those who are longing, loving and feel sad when prevented and deprived for many years from reaching the House of Allaah The Almighty.
Hence, the first thing with which man gets ready is yearning and longing for the House of Allaah The Almighty. If he does not feel longing or yearning, where is his longing for Allaah The Exalted? He will remain in this state of deprivation, remoteness, and disinclination between himself and Allaah The Almighty.
Therefore, this is the first thing with which man prepares himself to be granted the blessings of Allaah The Almighty. If Allaah The Almighty wants a slave to visit His House and attain the honor of this visit and this great rank of the religion, He enables all the factors that bring this about.
Many times we hear about and watch the journeys of those who have the longing for Allaah The Exalted.

Allaah The Almighty arranges for them what they themselves did not expect, such as money, traveling and visa and such other issues which may act as impediments or obstacles. Such obstacles and impediments do not exist for Allaah The Almighty, who only has to say to anything: “Be” and it is. In the story of Zakariyya may Allaah exalt his mention he recited this amazing supplication (which means): {and my wife has been barren, so give me from Yourself an heir.}[Quran 19:5] The verse means, my wife cannot give birth and I want to have a child! My wife is barren but Your mercy, power, and might are not compared to anything and this power and might are in charge of everything and capable of making everything possible. Allaah The Almighty Says (what means):{His command is only when He intends a thing that He says to it, “Be,” and it is.} [Quran 36:82] This meaning also applies to Hajj and other things as well.

Those who long for Allaah The Exalted, for His House and for being honored with visiting these places, the places of the endeavor of the righteous, gatherings of the sincere slaves of Allaah The Almighty, and the places of mercy where tears are shed and obstacles are removed, should offer something to prove their longing. This longing appears in the good deeds with which they wish Allaah The Almighty would carry them and take them to His House, and that Allaah the Generous and the highest grants them this visit, from which one returns with his sins forgiven and himself as sinless as a newborn baby.
